There were many bands and groups that emerged during the 1980's. Many of them have continued to produce albums and tour even to today. Unfortunately due to the amount of musicians and musical groups that were around during the 1980's we cannot mention them all, however, we will try to mention as many as possible.

There were many different types of musicians out there in the 80's from heavy metal to power ballads to pop and hip hop. Below is a list of several bands and musicians that shaped music and are still popular today.

Bruce Springsteen is one of the most famous musicians of all time. He came out of New Jersey and rose to the top very quickly. Some of his most famous songs are "Born to Run" "Born in the USA" and "Jungleland". During the 80's he released the album "Born in the U.S.A." He still tours today and sometimes makes guest appearances at the Stone Pony, where he got started.

 

Van halen

     
Van Halen was a band started by two brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen. They started in Amsterdam, Holland and then grew from there. They would play in clubs and other venues getting their name out there through self promotion. Some of their most famous songs are "Panama" "Eruption" "Hot for Teacher" and "Jump". There is rumors of a new album going to be released soon possibly with former lead sing David Lee Roth.

Michael Jackson is the most popular musician of the 1980's. He was the King of Pop. He had multiple top albums and singles with "Thriller" being the most famous. He was a revolutionary artist. He created the first music video, which is more like a short movie than a music video. When he died in 2009 there was a rebirth of his music.

     
                               
                                 

U2 is a band that started out in Ireland with a bunch of friends. They started out playing small gigs and then worked up from there. Many people wonder why they chose the name U2 and Bono says that they were given a list of names to choose from and it was the one the band hated the least. They have had many hits including "Sunday Bloody Sunday", which is their most played song on tour, "With or Without You" and "Vertigo". They have earned 22 Grammy, which ties Stevie Wonder for the most of any contemporary artist. Now the band is doing different things. Bono and The Edge worked on the Broadway Musical Spiderman.

                                 
      madonna         Madonna started her career in 1979 and since then has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. She is recognized as the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness World Records. She released her debut album in 1983. She has been called one of the most influential women of all time by Time magazine. Some of her number one songs include "Like a Virgin", "Papa Don't Preach", "Like a Prayer", "Vogue", "Frozen", "Music", "Hung Up", and "4 Minutes". She was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. She is the most successful solo artist second overall only to the beatles.      
                     
journey   Journey was a rock ballad band that started in California from former members of the band Santana. In 1981 they released their number one hit song and the top selling iTunes track of all time, "Don't Stop Believing". They are one of Americas beloved commercial bands of all time according to Allmusic. Their popularity was at its height from 1981-83 where they released their album Escape. This album has gone 9 times platinum since the release.
                                 
      bon jovi   Bon Jovi is a Rock band started in New Jersey by John Bon Jovi. The band has had many number one hits including "You Gave Love a Bad Name" and "Living On a Prayer" Their 1986 album "Slippery When Wet" which has the songs listed above and was listed as the number selling album in 1987. It holds the record for the longest time that a hard rock album has been the number one album.      
                   
                                 
      peter cetera       Peter Cetera was a singer from Chicago that split off from the band and went on a solo career in the 80's. His biggest hit was the "Glory of Love" which is a love song that went to be number 1 in the US and similarly around the world. This song was the theme song for the Karate Kid and won many awards for that part in the movie.      
                                 
  phil collins   Phil Collins is a drummer that started with the band Genesis but then went on to do a solo career. Some of his most famous songs are "Sussudio" "One More Night" & "Another Day in Paradise" He released the album No Jacket Required which went number one in the U.S. and U.K. He played in the charity event Live Aid where he was the only performer to play in Philly and at Wimbledon thanks to the Concord jet.
