This dance style first evolved in New York City in the 1970’s.  This dance became a foundation for the hip hop culture. Some earlier forms of hip hop have been said to help reduce gang violence by replacing the violence with music and dancing. It helps people learn to take out their emotions and feelings in different ways.

In the 1970's people started hosting outdoor parties where others would come and learn to express themselves using hip hop. So instead of getting into trouble they would learn to have fun in a new way. Today, hip hop is a very common form of dance practiced by many different races and religions, but it is not just a dance style, or genre, it is also a culture and way of life for some people.

Hip Hop evolved from a hip hop culture.  It includes many different moves and steps such as breaking, popping, locking, and krumping.  Hip Hop is a type of dance that involves your whole body not just one part such as your feet.  An important part in learning the art of hip hop, is learning to use improvisational skills.
