John Winston Lennon was born in Liverpool, England on October 9, 1940. He was named after he grandfather (John Lennon) and Winston Churchill. His father was away from home as a sea merchant during World War II. Lennon was raised by his mother until he was four when his aunt (Mimi Smith) took custody of him. John's mother Julia frequently visited him and taught him how to play the banjo and had him listen to Elvis Presley's records. This is where Lennon's love for music started. He frequently visited Fleetwood and Liverpool to attend music shows. Julia bought Lennon his first guitar in 1957. When John was 17 his mom died in a car accident.
